Tiki head masks became cultural icons in the United States in the 1950s.  They had always been decorative items in tiki bars since the first tiki bar opened in 1933, but they became a symbol of yearning for a primitive more permissive society that were ideal to display in the middle of a society that was not.  Tiki masks became the emblem of the swinging bachelor lifestyle of this time period.  In almost every movie I have ever seen from this time period, the swinging bachelor's apartment will always have a tiki mask or two decorating its walls. It was this exotic bohemian lifestyle Hugh Hefner was trying to portray when he started his Playboy magazine in 1953 and later decorated his Playboy mansion with tiki masks.  It is why Elvis Presley put the same tiki masks on his walls when he built the "Jungle Room" at his Graceland Mansion.
The culture of the United States in the late 1950s was very constraining, and the South seas island culture portrayed by the so called Polynesian pop or tiki movement was not, it is surprising more people at the time didn't have tiki masks hanging on their walls.
